Banaras Hindu University (BHU) is a globally renowned institution of higher learning, located in the sacred city of Varanasi. Founded in 1916 by the eminent nationalist leader Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya, with the support of prominent figures like Dr. Annie Besant—who envisioned it as the “University of India”—BHU stands as a testament to creativity and innovation in education. Established under the B.H.U. Act of 1915 passed by Parliament, the university played a pivotal role in India’s independence movement and has grown into one of the foremost centers of learning in the country.
BHU has produced numerous freedom fighters and nation-builders and has significantly contributed to national development through its alumni—renowned scholars, scientists, artists, and technologists. The university’s main campus spans 1,300 acres, featuring well-maintained roads, lush greenery, impressive architecture, a temple, and even an airstrip originally developed for pilot training during World War II. A second campus at Barkachha in the Mirzapur district, covering 2,700 acres, is also being developed.
The university is organized into 6 institutes, 14 faculties, and 144 departments, along with 4 interdisciplinary centers, a constituent women’s college, and 3 constituent schools. BHU offers academic programs across a wide spectrum of disciplines including humanities, social sciences, science, medicine, engineering, fine arts, and performing arts. It boasts 6 Centres of Advanced Study, 10 departments under the Special Assistance Programme, and numerous specialized research centers. Additionally, four degree colleges in Varanasi are affiliated with the university.
The Bharat Kala Bhavan museum, a cultural gem within the campus, houses an exceptional collection of art and artifacts. The university’s 927-bed hospital is equipped with modern medical facilities. BHU also provides extensive facilities for sports and extracurricular activities, including large playgrounds, a flying club, a spacious auditorium, and various support services such as a printing press, publication cell, fruit preservation center, subsidized canteens, and employment and information bureau.
The BHU community includes around 15,000 students from diverse backgrounds, approximately 1,700 faculty members, and 8,000 non-teaching staff. It also attracts students from across the globe, including from the USA, Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and Africa. Banaras Hindu University continues to lead in fostering intellectual growth, cultural integration, and the pursuit of new ideas—truly a microcosm of the world.
